On August 6, 2011 Navy Special Warfare Operator Petty Officer 2nd Class (SEAL) Nicholas Spehar was on board Extortion 17 over the Wardak province of Afghanistan. The Chinook helicopter was en route to provide reinforcement for a group of Army Rangers when the aircraft was shot down by a Rocket Propelled Grenade. Spehar and 30 of his cohorts lost their lives in what has been recognized as one of the largest tragedies in US history.

SEAL officer Nick Spehar started his Navy career in 2007 and completed his BUDs training in Class 267. He first served with Seal Team Five and was deployed to the Philippines to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. There, he earned the position of Honor Man in the Naval Special Warfare Lead Breacher and Naval Special Warfare Sniper. After a deployment in Yemen, Spehar volunteered for deployment and joined Seal Team Six in Afghanistan.

Nick Spehar was only 24 years old at the time of the incident.

how they help

Jake Spehar is a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor in Minnesota who specializes in helping save those with addictions so they can in turn save their lives and support their families. Jake is also the younger brother of Navy SEAL Nick Spehar who died onboard the Extortion 17. Jake was contacted by 31 Heroes several months after the tragedy that killed his brother and after Jake had finished his degree in Phycology 31 Heroes lent him a helping hand. They where able to equip Jake with a grant from the Travis Manning Foundation and the Navy Seal Foundation so Jake could complete his masters and begin applying himself to helping others. “31 Heroes gave me an opportunity to give back as Addiction Counselor,” said Jake. “Everyday I see first hand the impact that they have had and how I can pass it along.”

Nick Spehar's death has gone on to be something very special to lots of people in need. He was a hero before his death, and continues to have an equally heroic effect after. “My brother would never consider himself a hero,” added Jake. “ To see his death be part of such a good cause would make him really happy.”
