It’s impossible. I don’t have time. I’ll do it tomorrow. I just don’t have the energy. The list goes on and on and on. You’ve heard them, I have heard them, everyone has heard some variation of these words and then some, on why they struggle to balance work and life beyond work. Balance stems from our physiology (homeostasis). It is a basic human function to strive to achieve balance but that does not mean it comes easy. So much is thrown at us on a daily basis, making it more and more difficult to remain 'centered'. With all this 'noise', it is far too easy to push important people/items away and lose sight of what makes us feel happy, a key component of balance.

So what truly is the problem? How is it that so many people struggle to find the time to physically and psychologically invest in themselves whereas others (be it the minority) are able to make it work? Those that say finding the balance is challenging are over complicating things. Finding the balance is much easier than most believe – it boils down to two things – what ultimately is important to you and consistency. True balance can never be accomplished by just putting 100% effort into one thing - then that one thing takes all your energy and surprise, surprise you are out of balance yet again!

We all have things that we should do, but all you have to really do is identify the MUSTS. Making spending time with your spouse, your kids, your family, going to the gym, a MUST instead of a ‘should’ is how you determine what is important and what is not. Once you accomplish this, staying consistent with what you determine is important, becomes easier because in most cases, the ‘musts’ of your life bring you the most joy. Yes it is easier said then done and yes, it will take time to learn what your musts are. You will also fail to be consistent - this is normal! Balance is a fluid process and there will be ups and downs. Staying focused on your 'musts' and learning that becoming consistent takes effort, will ultimately lead you down the right path.
