Health at Any Age
What does health mean to you?
To me health is about keeping your body in the best shape that YOU can so that you not only feel good and look good, but you can attack the mental and physical challenges that you face everyday. People that keep themselves fit and stay in shape year round tend to approach life with more energy and have a better outlook on it. If you like the shape you are in and feel healthy, you tend to have a better outlook on life.
How do you maintain your health?
I maintain my health by eating an intuitively moderate diet and make sure that I get at least an hour of weight and functional training 5 days a week. I look for ways that I can burn calories or build muscle even beyond my training routine, like mowing my own lawn, bike rides with the kids, yard work, etc.
In your experience, what is the most important thing you have learned about being healthy?
It's so important to get the most out of life. The healthier you are, the happier you are. You don't realize how important it is for longevity until you have it taken away from you. Get it in when you can, while you can.
If you could give advice to your younger self on maintaining a healthy lifestyle - what would it be?
I became aware of fitness and diet and how valuable they are at a very young age. The biggest key is to stay consistent with everything, year round, so you don't ever have to play catch up.
What are 3 tips you have for creating sustainable healthy habits?
Stay consistent, find what works best for YOU, stay away from diets that are not sustainable for life.
You are a father of 5, how do you help each of your kids stay healthy at their various ages?
Being a father of 5 (21, 19, 18, 9, 7), leading by example with exercise and diet has helped the most. If your kids see you doing it, most likely they will follow and they will definitely ask questions, which leads to a teaching opportunity. Doing as I say and not as I do tends to turn kids off.
How does health affect your life (i.e. mind, body, soul)?
When you feel good about yourself, the way you look and feel, it bleeds into the rest of your life. If you are not happy with your health, it becomes more difficult to be happy in life. Exercise is my outlet and my time to clear my mind from all of the distractions of the day.
Health is more than just physical, what do you do to ensure you maintain your mental health?
I use physical exertion as a means to declutter my mind and maintain a solid mental health balance. I make sure I set aside time daily for myself so that I can give more to my family and friends.
Any advice for people that struggle with their health?
Make it a priority. Schedule exercise time for yourself. Don't wing it and hope you will have time to get it done. If it is on your schedule, you are more likely to make it happen.
What advice do you have for those who feel like it may be too late in life to make a change and focus on their health?
It's never too late. You can make gigantic improvements at any time in your life. Most people get to a certain age and just give up. There is absolutely no reason to quit if you don't want to. Life improves as your health improves, at any age.
