Service Spotlight: Military Spouse Mandy Freebairn
In honor of Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we asked military spouse, Mandy Freebairn what it's like to be an army wife. Here's what she had to say:
Describe one of your most vivid military moments together.
The most vivid military moment I have was when I watched my husband graduate from flight school to pursue his dream of flying the Apache helicopter. After moving across the country to Alabama and countless hours of studying, my husband earned his wings that I had the honor of pinning onto him. Since joining the army, my husband’s dream has always been to become a helicopter pilot. After four years of perseverance I was able to witness him achieve his goal. Watching someone you love succeed at something they have put their all into is the most rewarding moment you can have. I remember looking at our children and thinking how proud I was of their father who was able to accomplish so much, no matter the challenges.
What is the best advice you'd give to new military spouses?
The best piece of advice I can give to new spouses would be to let go of the things you cannot control. The phrase, “Hurry up and wait,” is a common one uttered in the military. I can not count how many times certain dates were changed and we were forced to be flexible. Rather than allowing the stress to wear you down, learn to embrace the changes that will inevitably occur. The faster you learn to adapt, the better off you will be.
What do you love most about being a military spouse?
As a wife, you get to see the behind the scenes of military life. Both the good, and the bad. Not many people have the opportunity to see the sides of the men in uniforms that we do. This is my favorite aspect of being a military spouse. When the world demands perfection, we are the ones who see the toll that takes at the end of the day. I feel that this is what makes me appreciate those in uniform even more.
