Every week HYLETE shines the spotlight on certified trainer, gym owner, or service league member. We do this to show our appreciation for leaders in the HYLETE nation and the functional fitness community.
Why you joined the military: "I decided to join the Navy to create a better life for myself. When I was 18-years-old, I was 6'5" and 350 pounds. I was sedentary and morbidly obese. When I decided to join the Navy after graduating from high school early, I had to lose more than 130 pounds. Within six months I had lost the weight I needed and achieved a level of fitness to allow me to enlist."
Advice for other members of the military: "Be proud of your service and maintain a superior level of professionalism and fitness. Remember, you are a role model for every American citizen... whether you acknowledge it or not, the general public holds us in high esteem."
Proudest moment on the job: "My proudest moment in the Navy was when I was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) in 2013. We were tasked with assisting in the relief of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines as part of a joint effort called Operation Damayan. Out of the nearly 6,000 Sailors on my ship I had the opportunity to go ashore and deliver food and supplies to the residents most affected by the disaster. I was able to meet the Filipino people who had lost everything. The joy on their faces and the gratitude they expressed made me wholly understand how important my role as a U.S. Navy Sailor is."
