In celebration of National Personal Trainer Day, we’re featuring trainers in the HYLETE community throughout the month. We asked NASM certified personal trainer, Dan Saldana, to share his expert voice with the HYLETE community. Here's what he had to say.

How long have you been a certified trainer?

I have been a certified personal trainer going on 6 years. I am currently certified through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine).

What made you want to pursue a career as a trainer?

After working in the Environmental Industry for nearly a decade, I decided to pursue my passion for empowering others to succeed in their personal fitness journey. I have been your classic athlete since a young age. Growing up I played football, soccer, and baseball. I then began coaching football and soccer at the high school level. At that point, it was a pretty seamless transition from coach to trainer.

What style of training do you do?

My style of training is Functional Training and Functional Strength Training. Over the past six years, I have focused on exercises that are going to train the individual's muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks. The primary focus is simulating common movements you might do at home, at work, or in sports.

What is your New Year's resolution?

Further my education in regards to training/coaching. This coming year I want to become TacFit Steel Mace certified, as well as, NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) certified.

What is your number one health or fitness goal of 2021?

Half marathon. To prove to myself that I can do something that I wouldn’t normally want to do, which is running. Focus more on diet and how what you eat directly affects how you perform athletically.

What was your biggest accomplishment of 2020?

Pivoting my business and fostering my dream to open my own establishment.

Has your training methodology changed this year? If so, how?

Adapt to at-home training with limited equipment and being able to provide clients with a solid workout. My training methodology continues to evolve from when I started six years ago. Going from training clients to be an “athlete” and focusing more on being functional in day to day life.

Where do you see your career as a trainer going in 2021?

Continue to build on my business, streamline online training.

How do you hope to inspire your clients and followers in 2021?

This past year was a struggle for so many people on various levels, however, through continued handwork and dedication to my craft I have been able to run a successful business. I would like to show people that despite what life might throw at you, the most important thing is to believe in yourself. Despite the distractions one might face, it is important to stay grounded and trust the process.

As a trainer, what advice do you have for the HYLETE community?

Do what you love. Training for me is an opportunity to help people change their lives for the better. Look at personal training/coaching past the physical aspect and more as a lifestyle. Every client is a unique individual and needs to be treated as such. Nurture each and every relationship, continue to build trust, and most importantly listen to your clients

What do you train for?

Training is a passion for me, it gives me purpose. I train knowing that in some way I am making an impact for the positive on someone's life. I train for my family, for longevity, to live a life of happiness and good health.
