With over 33,000 certified trainers in the HYLETE community, we are passionate about amplifying the voices of trainers who inspire the health and well-being of others. We asked Registered Dietitian, Erik Bustillo for his advice on fitness, nutrition, and maintaining a positive attitude. Here's what he had to say.

What do you do to maintain your positivity?

This is definitely a multi-layered answer! First, my family, especially my mom and grandmother did a great job of raising me with an optimistic outlook. Much less keeps me down thanks to this! Second, the people I keep around. My chosen family (friends) are pretty awesome and are there for me if I ever need them. Third, MUSIC. Music is such an important and influential factor in my life. It allows me to escape without physically going anywhere! Fourth, maintaining an optimal diet & supplementation as this can greatly impact mood. Fifth, EXERCISE. Moving my body, getting a good sweat, moving some weights around, playing a sport…. They’re all so helpful in maintaining the right attitude.

What do you love about your profession?

I love helping people. I love having an impact on someone and the world. To be able to help educate someone and inspire them to be healthy, strong, and capable… that’s amazing.

Does Zoom really work for trainers?

Yes. It gives trainers access to people who cannot, for whatever reason, make it in person. It also works great for Registered Dietitians who work with patients/clients. The internet has given us access and “reach” to more folks.

What are your best quick tips to maintain proper nutrition during quarantine?

I have a few of them!

  1. Focus on protein to help maintain appetite and muscle mass.
  2. Snack on fruits (even as dessert) and eat vegetables as snacks and with lunch & dinner.
  3. Stay active! Not directly nutrition related, but healthy behavior like exercise tends to affect diet choices.
  4. Drink water all throughout the day.
  5. DO NOT OVER RESTRICT, there are no bad foods, just portion sizes that aren’t optimal… and this varies per person and their respective goals.

What is a challenge you have faced in your career? How did you overcome it?

Taking a patient’s/client’s shortcomings too personally. I learned QUICKLY & EARLY in my career that one can only lead a horse to water and cannot make it drink, but over time I got better at helping the horse drink… not every horse drinks though. It’s important to be able to accept “defeat” but try ones best. Learning to coach people and be empathetic were two major factors that helped me improve as a health coach.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the HYLETE community?

Find me on Instagram, and say hi @erikbustillo. I’m the son of immigrant parents from Cuba & Colombia. The family before me (grandparents, parents, brother) busted their butts and I’ve learned so much from them and appreciate their hard work. I am who I am because of them. My brother was the person who got me into nutrition and weight lifting. I enjoy playing all sports (in case you’re ever in Miami, FL) and I also like doing CrossFit as a training modality mixed with a few other things. Lastly, I love Oreos!

What is your favorite HYLETE product?

So many awesome products to choose from! I really love the quality of the tees, the gear representing America, and of course the “Barbells for Bullies” tee. Men’s “Fuse” shorts are also very comfortable!
